Relationships Between Shots
In the film "Old Boy" at about 13:33, a scene begins with a close up of the protagonist's hand. He is tattoing a tally mark into his skin. There is a cut to the corner of his bed where he puts the needle back. Another cut to him digging into a wall with a metal chopstick. This is a series of cuts is related to his daily routine and shows the viewers how his life is with the juxtaposition of the images. The next few cuts are an example of the Kuleshov effect. There is a close up shot of his hand with some tally marks tattooed onto it, then there is a cut to a close up shot of him digging into a wall, another cut to his hand with more tally marks, and then a cut to the hole in the wall that is now evidently much deeper. Having the images put together, the viewer can assume that over the years that the hole in the wall gets deeper. In this last portion of the scene, there is a cut to a wide shot the other side of the hole. The protagonist's head emerges from the hole this is a reaction shot. There is another cut to an extreme close up of his face, showing a deeper reaction shot. This is a two shot sequence where we see him and then his reaction. There is no dialogue, but we see the expression on his face which shows his inner thoughts. The screen splits, and there is now two images. To the right of the screen, he is still digging and progressing through the hole. To the left, there is a close up shot to the news channel on his television. The images are contrasting, because on the television we see clips of current events. There is a contrast of him in the contained environment, and the outside world. The clips on the television are also sped up one example being Princess Diana doing something, then a cut to an image of her death. The cuts of the news show the progression of time as he continues with his hole. The matching of the images shows the viewer that his hole gets bigger through the years. The last cut of the scene is still on the split screen, but both images to the right and left are changed now. The protagonist is seen boxing, a close up of him punching towards the camera, also a reaction shot. The image to the right, is still on the television, but what is seen on the television is the Korean flag waving. The pairing of these two images shows the character's internal strength and growth. There is a parallel feeling of pride and strength with the character and the flag.
Here is a link to a one short film:

The short is 14 seconds long, and I really enjoy it. If you like horror, you should check out his page. Most of his films are low budget and shot in his apartment with his girlfriend as the only actor.
